History of the Gamma Chapter... |
The Gamma Chapter of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity Inc. was
established at Saint John's University on May 26, 1994. The formation of
the first and only Latino brotherhood with beliefs, ideologies, and goals
standing for the empowerment of our Latino people at Saint John's
University was brought about by the inspiration of the first three
brothers inducted into the fraternity. The founding hermanos of the Gamma
Chapter are Gabriel A. Pagano (Summer 1993), Ryzard H. Villa and Julio C.
Silva Jr. (Spring 1994). These brothers were initiated by undergraduate
brothers, alumni and founding fathers of Lambda Alpha Upsilon. They paved
the path and prepared the torch for the culturally diverse community and
the National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC) at Saint John's University.
The Executive Committee of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity Inc.
granted the Gamma Chapter full rights and privileges as an active chapter
on April 29, 1996 when the Gamma Colony was officially recognized as a
Greek chapter by the Student Government at Saint John’s. The Gamma
Chapter has been a strong voice in the New York City Latino community
since its inception into the fraternity and Saint John's University.
Thanks also, to the induction of new brothers (Jason Helguero, Steven
Rivera, Washington J. Chavez, Adelso Fernandez, Tshalla Hernandez, Richard
Fernandez, Rafael Rodriguez, Gerardo Gonzalez, and Luis Ortiz), the Gamma
Chapter's workforce has contributed to bring many new smiles and warm
hearts to families in our community. Some of the community services the
Gamma Chapter has participated in are: Soup Kitchens in Manhattan
and Queens, mentoring and tutoring high school students at Jamaica High
School, sponsoring clothes and food drives for the homeless, protesting
against New York State educational budget cuts and participating in
college seminars for youth.
The Gamma Chapter constantly redirects its focus to better benefit the
needs of the Latino Community. Our main goal is to solidify our voice and
help bring about the realization of the Metas of Lambda Alpha Upsilon with
the highest ideals and values. We, the brothers of Latino America Unida,
Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity Inc., Gamma Chapter, will always believe
that regardless of what obstacles or difficulties stand in our way, that
