Ok as I have said before, don't expect to be educated by visiting my webpage. It's just purely for entertainment. This page ain't gonna tell you how to tell the acidity or the texture of the coffee... it's not even gonna tell how to spell Caffe Latte (oh shoots just did that). It's more just useless coffee news about some establishments that I may very well get sued over. But here goes...

Starbucks used to be one of my all time hated coffee joint but I must admit that now it is fast growing on my favourite list. It doesn't have much to offer that is unique from the others but what it does have is a great cup of Americano. It's just simple Espresso pulled with water but it tastes great. I didn't really like the Coffee of the Day cos it didn't have that foamy thingee from machine brewed coffee (which is quite a stupid reason) but also cos I also thought that it was too weak... but not now though. Maybe it was just a bad batch of coffee but the brew that Starbucks throws out is really quite good. One thing that Starbucks has to call its on is the Tea Infusions which are yummy... especially the Summer Peach Tea with Cinnamon which is my absolute favourite from that joint. Oh the lollies by the counter are pretty good too though the pastries are pretty sucky.

Coffee Club, one of my favourite coffee places, has slight price differences in their locations. The prices of the Coffee Club in Boat Quay is about $1 higher in general compared with the rest of the Coffee Clubs around Singapore (which is Holland V, Ngee Ann City, Boat Quay, Siglap and Millenia Walk). There are also slight differences in the menu variety in the different outlets. The Siglap outlet for example does not have healthy ice cream (which is soya ice-cream... i.e. ice-cream made of soya beans and rice milk... SOYA BEANS???) which really really sucks. Some people may try it and grit their teeth and say it's ok but they are lying. It sucks. My advice is to give that a miss and try some other stuff like the Wicked Brownie and the Ice Earl's Vanilla is surprisingly good even though it sounds evil. The food ain't too bad too. Try the Country Pie if you love mashed potatoes cos it is done really well with a blanket of cheese to go over it. Remember that Coffee Club ain't the place to go if you are hungry cos the Country Pie is about the most substantial food item that they offer. The gourmet coffee is also really good but if you are not willing to cough out so much for black liquid, then go for the Regular Coffee which is my favourite.

This is the new kid on the block in the coffee community in Singapore. Recently opened at Capitol Building, Seattle Coffee Company which has branches all over the world, has proved itself a worthy competitor. Losing out on pricing to Starbucks who has a slightly cheaper menu, Seattle Coffee Company makes up for it with its great espresso blend and the ambiance in this joint beats the wet market noise level of Starbucks or The Coffee Bean. They have a pretty extensive menu from Espresso drinks to Gourmet Coffees. They too have their own version of ice blended drinks which comes in 2 forms - Seattle Freeze & Mocha Freeze. A little out of the way but surely worth a try.

How to taste your coffee... something I have yet to learn.

Ok I lied... this part does tell you how to taste that drink you just blew $5 on. Though I have yet to learn how to tell the acidity or the body of the coffee (for me it's just good coffee or lousy coffee), this might help those that want to know how to do the coffee tasting gig.

Acidity

Acidity is the pleasantly sharp or bright finish that coffee leaves in the back of the mouth. Think of tasting wine rather than lemons. An acidic coffee is similar to dry wine, so we're not talking about sour or bitter flavours here. Mildly acidic coffee is smooth and velvety while highly acidic coffee has a clean crisp finish.

Body

The body of the coffee is the sense of heaviness, thickness or richness that envelopes the mouth and a good indicator is how the flavour of the coffee carries through the milk. So if you are a 'dairy fiend' we recommend a full bodied coffee.

Geddit? Nope? It's ok... neither do I. What the heck... just as long as you enjoy the coffee and the company, who the hell worries about all these coffee jargon? Wala!

Many thanks to Seattle Coffee Company for the information on tasting coffee. Taken from The Seattle Taste pamphlet.

This webpage ain't that useless after all huh.

Email me your coffee reviews too.

The coffee committee (comprising of me only) will review your report with the most stringent standards and put it on this website if they pass our Quality Control Department. (this is pretty much talk cock... just email me and I'll put your comment in too!)
