3 August 1998 Attached Is a letter from a William Regelson, apparently a member of your faculty. I have no intention of addressing Mr. Regelson's ridiculous allegations; however, you are no doubt familiar with NIH guidelines and can understand the degree to which Mr. Regelson's allegations are unfounded. My concern It at another level. It is inconceivable to me that a faculty member could make allegations Intended to harm another individual without credible evidence. Did Mr. Regelson talk to me, read the reports of three elected faculty committees. attend public hearings, or read Me transcripts of the witnesses? If Mr. Regelson conducts research with the same attention to the literature and available data that he has in this cage, you have a serious problem on your hands. There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Regelson has committed a gross breach of professional ethics through his actions. As a consequence, I am charging Mr. Regelson with a violation of academic ethics and am requesting that you initiate your process to Investigate and act an my allegation. The academic community has to expect and hold all members to the highest Standards of ethics and professional behavior. This goes well beyond academic freedom and is critical to our credibility. Sincerely, Michael A. Cusanovich Vice President for Research MAC/mdc Xc: President, Virginia Commonwealth University Peter Likins, President, University of Arizona Paul Sypherd, Provost, University of Arizona |
