Dear Dr. Likins,
Katholieke
It is not my habit to comment on the affairs of other people or institutions, but the situation regarding Dr. Marguerite Kay, who, as I understand, has been fired by your university on grounds of scientific misconduct, compels me to make an exception.
I have worked in Dr. Kay's laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow for four years (1983-1987) at Texas A&M University in Temple, Texas, and have, since that time, collaborated with her on and off after I started my own research group in the Netherlands. The research I did in Dr. Kay's laboratory resulted in 10 publications, and the mutual exchange of material and ideas after 1987 in another three. During that time of very close collaboration, especially in 1983-1987, we discussed our results on an almost daily basis. Then, as well as afterwards, Dr. Kay not only impressed me by her deep insight into all aspects of aging, but also by her high standards regarding the "scientific quality" of our output. In our collaboration since 1987, the materials that I received from Dr. Kay produced data that were identical to the data she had published, and/or confirmed the data I had obtained with my own materials. I know from personal
communciations, as well as from published reports, that other scientists had the same experience.
Thus, based on my professional and personal knowledge of Dr. Kay of more than fifteen years, I must conclude that the proceedings against Dr. Kay are based on grounds unknown to me, but that can not be based on scientific misconduct.
Therefore, I ask you to do whatever is in your power to reverse the decision to fire Dr. Kay.
Sincerely,
Giel Bosman, Ph.D.
