A Modest Proposition

Editor:

As you may know, this city has turned down Proposition 8, to create gambling casinos, throughout this state when it is in need of a tourism jolt. In showing another example of the image, Jacksonville in particular, of a hard nosed bible thrower with her back to society, we have succeeded. I am not saying that our morals should be abandoned, rather, we should be pushing these principles into a more modern, and barbaric world, if nothing else but to raise the level.

There were no loud moral objections except, of course, the evils of gambling. This hurdle, however has already been jumped by the Florida Lottery. Basically there was no argument that had not already been used for either the lottery or the NFL. We already have gangs and we are the sixty-sixth safest city out of ninety-three. Taxes would go down, you've probably heard the pro argument. The only new con argument was just barely avoided by us "pros" -organ-ized crime. I don't think we should have sucked in our gut and ducked from this supposed ogre or even fought it. I say we should let the Mafia with open arms.

Come on, why not? The Mob is the best run organiza-tion, bar none, in the world. They would provide some much needed jobs to this city with little more than McJobs available. Our local politics are a shamble. The same men are running to the mayoral list, without new ideas or faces. The city council is a fourth grade classroom with our line of mayors being trusting substitute teachers. Bringing in the mob will put City Hall in its place. A book drop by any of them will send them floating north in the St. Johns. Look at Chicago. Mayor Dayley got President Kennedy elected nearly single handedly.

Say what you want about there city's and sports teams' luck, the state of Florida has seven major league sports teams, while the city of Chicago has seven in and of itself. If you think their city hasn't have the Mafia from the beginning, not only are you unread, I have two items to remind you about. The 1919 White Sox and a short Italian named Capone.

The Mafia, aside from providing jobs will cause us no harm. They don't hit you if you're not one of them. That way also, they kill themselves, only knocking off the criminals anyway. They remove pests and improve your way of life. The best delis and stores in the world are fronts. Nothing really bad can happen.

Look, I am not saying we should become organized crime bosses, but if they come, we're better for it. They'll improve local government, our reputation as a city, and make this city a better place to live. I am not saying that our morals should be abandoned, rather, we should be pushing these principles into a more modern, and barbaric world, to help even it out. The Mafia is a very devout and religious group, we would be in good hands. With a brilliant future to look forward to, knowing myself, some honest and hardworking Christians, I personally am putting out a welcome mat and kneeling on one knee for the mob to come.
