Strike

@@@@

An Israeli student pays for his or her college education at the cost of 10,000 NIS per year. One shekel is about a quarter, so that comes to about $2500 a year. Apparently, that's too much for them. The students all went on strike. They only wanted to pay 3000 shekels a year. So, all of the students, in all of the universities across the country, went on strike.

Well, no, we didn't. All of the Israelis did. We had to go to classes. That wouldn't be a problem, except the Israelis forcibly locked up the school. Our dorms, which were a block away (we dormed amidst the Israelis) were open and our classes were transferred over to us, over there. It's very difficult to explain why you're late to class, when the classes are in the dorms.

The only people who could get into the school, past the security guards, were employees of the school. That means that whenever we needed to get into the OSP office, print anything out, or go to the bank, we would have to go into covert operation mode. Sliding under fences, separating space between barbed wire, trying to befriend the guards go so we could get in, it was...college life for about a month.

I enjoyed it. I had no roommates. I was in my room, enjoying myself. The Israelis were pretty much gone, we basically had the place to ourselves.

OK, yes, there were problems. The Israelis did try to bring us into the rallies, forcibly at times. The rallies weren't so bad. They were stupid...a few people were arrested, but none of us. If you wanted a cheap ride to Jerusalem, Chaifa, or Tel Aviv, great, they'd pay for your ride. Just had to join their protest.

So, one month of these shenanigans, fighting, protests, lost money, lost time, forcing us to work around them, for them to save seven thousand NIS a year? No. Students got squat. It was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. How can you strike when you're the consumer, and you've already paid? It's like a repair shop calling you up, "OK, thank you for paying in advance. Your car is ready."

"Ha! I'm not taking the car! I'm making you guys hold on to it, to protest!" That might be a legitimate approach if the car was unsightly, or had a disturbing odor...but my former roommates were all back home...
