Okay, some of you are probably wondering what IRC is.... IRC is Internet Relay Chat and has been around a lot longer than all those damned Chat Websites. The problem I have with Yahoo Chat, Excite Chat and many others is that they allow the rooms to be flooded with ads, crudity and well, garbage in general.
I plan on writing my own helpfile on how to get and use IRC, but I'm in the midst of building this
website, so it will have to wait for a bit. For the mean time, I'll give you the standard files to check out.
Please keep in mind, its okay to ask questions, people on the net love to share their knowledge,
but I have to warn you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...check out the FAQ first. Asking the
questions that are already contained in the FAQs again and again will tend to ruin the patience of
even the most docile guides and helpers. By the way, FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions.
So, in order to appear like you know what you are doing, read the
FAQ's and Help files first. No one will bite
your head off for one or two questions in the FAQ's...well, at least most won't......
Why IRC?
- You can find moderated channels so you don't have to deal with all the general harassment.
- There are many different servers, some with thousands upon thousands of channels.
- Versatility -- IRC offers a lot more flexibility in what you can do in a chat room
- IRC is worldwide, so you can find people on at pretty much any time of the day or
night (I should know).
- You are not limited to one chatroom at a time either. You are not even limited
to one server at a time for that matter (have to make sure your software supports
multiple servers though.
Why NOT to IRC?
- If your are looking for all the garabage (i.e. porn sites, ads, etc) you can definately find it.
- Takes a bit of getting used to. With the additional versatility you get, you have to learn
how to use it. There are always channels such as #beginner, #newbies, etc. that will help you.
The people there love to show you all kinds of stuff you never thought possible.
