Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport.

You learn more from failure, because failure hurts.

To win, one must be big enough to see the worth in others, big enough to cheer when others score.

Turkeybowl 2004

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
Theodore Roosevelt

Threatened to rain this year, but it turned into a nice sunny day for most of the game. Some scattered details below, if you have a big play or funny incident that you think should get mentioned send me an e-mail!

Wayne Lee got Most Improved Player - Turns out if you can't see the opposition they can't intimidate you. MVP went to Ray and Chad - some nice catches by both of those guys, and Chad's ankle lock on Greg was priceless.

In other news Jeremy Craigs received an Oscar nod for his role in the short film "Football In The Groin". Rumours that his last words were "Down I go." could not be confirmed. He had fun on the kick returns though, well other than that one.

The ladies had fun as well, heading out for a hike in what has been dubbed "The Girly-Bowl". A good time was had by all.

Dinner was delicious as always, and I enjoyed my pumpkin pie despite the earlier apple vs. pumpkin pie debate. Special thanks to Paul for hosting us, everybody who cooked and prepped, and everyone else who chipped in!

Turkeybowl 2003
In doing your work in the great world, it is a safe plan to follow a rule I once heard on the football field: Don't flinch, don't fall; hit the line hard. - Theodore Roosevelt

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. - Bill Shankly

Started out as the "Fog Bowl" but the sun eventually came out so we could see the other end of the field! Was a great game I thought. Am in a lot less pain this year than last year.

Geoff Galizia got the MIP - Hitting the gym paid off, he made a ton of big tackles this year. MVP went to Paul Shaw and James Amarelo - some sweet catches by both of those guys. Barney had a nice run at QB with a bunch of TD passes. I don't remember tons about the game but it was fun!

Dinner was excellent once again, and I would like to go on record as saying that the chair collapsed as a result of an engineering defect. The heavy load of stuffed Jeremy was not the root cause!!!

Special thanks to Katie for hosting again, everybody who cooked and prepped, and everyone else who chipped in!

"Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football."
- John Heisman

Turkeybowl 2002
He lives not long who battles with the immortals, nor do his children prattle about his knees when he has come back from battle and the dread fray. Homer , The Iliad

"Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football."
- John Heisman

We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. - Sir Winston Churchill

"I just wrap my arms around the whole backfield and peel 'em one by one until I get to the ball carrier. Him I keep."
Big Daddy Lipscomb, NFL defensive tackle on tackling

Ouch. That's what I'm thinking right now. Paul said post dinner that this was probably the most physical game of recent memory, and my muscles tend to agree with him.

Big Plays: Give me more plays guys, my memory is strangely fuzzy.
- Cory Shaw with a big hit on Ghaz. Anyboddy else think he wanted that bad? He plucked a nice ball out of the hands of the defender and ran it in for a TD as well
- Dave made a nice play for a TD and an evven nicer tip for a Chalmers TD by the posts and the highlight reel...
- Ghaznavi with some nice catchs and a picck or two, raising a few eyebrows along with his elbow
- James picked off like two interceptions in the first ten minutes or so. A sign of things to come.
- Janna with a nice catch reminding peoplee that she needs to be covered!
- Jeremy Craigs blows past a stationary Baarney for a big sack on Varand.
[ each of whom smoked past me on runs later... doh!]
- LD made some huge hits and catches
- Mathews puts Benoit in a headlock and caarries him downfield
- Oshin made some fine runs, and a nice caatch or two. Also led the team in a tradional chant of "Who's Got My Brother?!?!?"
- Paul Shaw takes a well timed step as QB and leaves Ghaz and Jer in a pile on the ground
- Bengineer shatters the all time Turkey BBowl record for rolls of film used with *8* rolls!

Dinner was awesome as usual! That turkey was possibly the best I have ever had. Bigger is better baby! Stuffing and potatoes were tasty as always, Mmmm gravy. V stepped up for a deep philosophical debate over the merits of the creamed corn at the table. Cheryl's apple pie was FANtastic! The gleam in people's eyes when Paul walked in with a bowl of bacon.. (from the turkey).. It's hard to describe. ['Whats with you guys and bacon?!?']

Special thanks to Barney for hosting, everybody who cooked and prepped, Ben for hooking me up with his pictures, and everyone else who chipped in!

It's that time of the year. I know many people, including myself were looking forward to this weekend a LOT! Between the stress of the workplace, and as V pointed out at dinner, recent world events it was a nice break from regular life. Every year people comment how special this day is, and I agree. Not everyone gets the chance to come together with old friends, and new friends for a time of thanksgiving and the chance to beat the tar out of each other!

I showed up late so I missed the first quarter. I missed a TD by LD, and some other big plays. (Shaw can you fill in some details?) Katie was filming the first bit (and I did some more later). I am going to see what I can do about doing a video transfer and either post it up here or distribute it on CDs. We'll see.

Barney drafted me onto the offensive line for some reason where I got schooled by Igor and LD. Durf! Good fun... I don't really remember tons of details about the game overall. Personally I made a few decent plays including two interceptions, a swat down or two and a kick return. Dale will remember making a big hit on me on one of those interceptions. At least I hope he remembers, we were both a little shaky after that! Wayne burned me for a reception at least once. I thought for sure I had Naidoo brought down on one, but he broke free for another five yards on a big run. LD unfortunately hurt his hand and had to leave the game early, which was probably a big factor since he had been involved in two TDs and many big tackles. Shaw made a number of big passes and received a few too. V took a lot of big hits on some long runs. Most entertaining play of the game in my opinion had to be Dale getting the ball, Amarelo starts yelling "DALE! DALE!" like a lunatic. Dale kinda hops up and James throws him down! They had a good matchup going the whole game I'd say. Spencer and Naidoo stepped up and made a lot of big plays as the teams "Big Men" after Greg and LD left. Spencer and James were in the running for MVP, I didn't catch if they shared it or if one was the runner up, I'll have to check on that!

Oshin caught a pass for the final TD of the game, on a toss from Barney(?). I believe the final score was 8-7 TDs but I'm not positive.

Dinner was awesome! Jon McBride and I pitched in for the stuffing which I think turned out ok... I don't think we killed anyone :) Thanks to everyone else who helped out on the food. (Cheryl and Justin for the pies and potatoes, Shaw and V for a bunch, Kate for everything, I gained about ten pounds from Kathryn's awesome cookies and I am sure I am forgetting people - Thanks to you too!)

Anyways that's it from me for now. If anyone wants to add some sweet plays and stuff to this commentary let me know!

Turkeybowl 2000
I missed out on the actual football game part of the day,(Working) but made it for the dinner. The food was amazing, thanks to everyone who had a hand in making it. Geoff showed that he does indeed know his artery clogging foods by making up some tasty gravy. Brett came through with some very yummy pies, although she was not all that confident in them at first!

Watched the hockey and baseball games after dinner... Good time was had by all I think. If anybody has anything they would like to add, send me an email.

Turkeybowl 1998

On a nice October afternoon, the warriors of the day marched onto the field.
They chose their sides, and selected their weapons.
And then they rumbled.

In my humble opinion, Varand was the star of the day. Paul made a number of spectacular plays, but V consistently made the catches and evaded the tackles all day. Where was this kid for LP rugby huh? The most improved player had to be Cheryl Ovens. She ran the plays all day with no rewards and was left untouched all day,.. and then dropped the first pass! But she caught the next one, and the opposing team soon regretted leaving her undefended, as she made a couple of timely receptions.

The out of nowhere award goes to the tag-team efforts of the Yooner and Jeremy "McD's" Craigs. Francis found his calling at QB making some nice plays. The patented fall back and dump it to Jer for the run play worked a couple times. Craigs broke a number of tackles for big gains on two runs that left V kicking himself.. That is until Barney spanked him like a little baby. (Ouch!)

Everybody tried the QB position, some with more success than others. Moody was consistent, but lacked the passion brought to the position by Paul. The big boys came out to play with Barney and Yoon facing off a couple times. Jer tackled Barney but soon regretted it, yelling "Dont land on top of me. Oh damn! Dont land on me!" :)

Naidoo had a number of carries, with good yardage gains on each. Geoff had a passion belied by that beer gut of his, and showed good hustle with a number of suprising plays both on offense and defense. His brother Chris however excelled in other areas. The experimental use of a line had mixed results. Realising he was getting overpowered Chris wisely held like there was no tomorrow. Paul "Just call me Flutie" Shaw turned the mad defensive rushing to his advantage though, with a sweet pass to his lineman, Chris. Final score? I dunno...

Dinner at Galizias was great with good friends, good food, good beers, and some hockey on the tube. Food was amazing - who knew Geoff, Paul and Varand could cook! It just goes to show, guys can cook - they like to eat!

All 1998 pictures were taken by Katie, cropped and scanned by Jer.
