Thesis topic:

Palynomorphs as tracers of sediment transport to marine environments

This means that I examine marine sediments for fossil microrganisms (mostly dinoflagellate cysts and pollen) and infer sea level changes, and paleoclimates.

The sediments that I examine were deposited around the time of the last glacial termination (about 20 000 to 5 000 years ago). The melting ice sheets resulted in a sea level rise of about 125 m. The sediments deposited in a given area will change as the sea level changes. The succession of sedimentary layers will generally correspond with models developed in the sedimentology sub-discipline of sequence stratigraphy. Sequence stratigraphic models are usually based on an examination of the sedimentary structures. I hope to find palynological trends within the individual layers defined in a sequence of sediments deposited during rising sea levels.

My work will also contribute to the global database on sea level changes which can in turn provide clues to the rates of climate changes that occurred at this time. The shift from full glacial conditions to inter-glacial conditions was probably very rapid. The mechanisms that caused this shift are not very well understood. The anthropogenic induced shifts to the composition of our atmosphere have some scientists concerned that severe climate shifts such as more intense storms, hotter summers and colder winters will result. Rather intense studies over the past decade by climate modellers indicates that our climate system is far more complex than was anticipated. Climate modelers use the data gathered in studies such my thesis

    A fellow palynolgist's B.S. page

    Hobbies:

  • Fossil Collecting Some of my own specimens will be displayed soon. In the background is a reconstruction of Terataspis grandis. I've never found one but the search goes on. Click here for some more really cool Trilobite photos. It's the best Trilobite wed page I've seen
  • My buddy Andrew (a fellow Brock Alumni) also has a really cool fossil web site

  • Most Sports (I'm no expert at any one in particular but I'll try just about anything)

  • Road Trips whether it's skiing in Quebec City, camping in the Grand Canyon, hitting the beach in Florida or gambling in Atlantic City, count me in

  • Scuba Diving I've been spoiled. After diving on the coral reefs off the northern coast of Cuba, the murky lakes of southern Ontario just aren't very exciting anymore.
