The Delta Upsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi had it's start as the Huron Band Club. The Huron Band Club, despite being in existence for only a short time, had it's roots deeply imbedded in Kappa Kappa Psi tradition. The organization was a direct descendant of the Beta Gamma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at Louisiana State University. Dr. Thomas Tyra, who had previously served as Director of Bands at LSU, and his graduate assistants, Wayne Richardson and Albert Lynd (both past presidents of the Beta Gamma Chapter), inspired the formation of the club in the traditional Kappa Kappa Psi manner. They instilled the time honored spirit of the fraternity into the personalities of the fourteen (14) men who comprised the club. The Huron Band Club held it's first meeting on February 11, 1965. Careful planning and organization made the group function in a manner worthy of Kappa Kappa Psi from its' inception. The Huron Band Club's Charter Officers were President Wayne Richardson, Vice President Garry Leonard, Secretary Ron Sutton, and Treasurer Jack Munn. The purposes, objectives, and goals of Kappa Kappa Psi were dicussed. The group also dicussed projects and divided them into areas of petition, service, projects for the band, and fund raising activities. The Chapter Constitution was read in full and was officially adopted during the April 14th meeting, pending approval by National Headquarters. Plans were made to have the official installation of the Huron band Club as a chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi on May 16, 1965, once again, pending the approval
of the petition for a chater. Nu chapter, from the University of Michigan, claimed the honor and prepared an impressive ceremony. An installation banquet was held afterwards and was emceed by Dr. George Cavender, the Assistant Director of bands at the University of Michigan.
