Copying Text from a Web Document
There are two ways of copying information from a web document. The first is to download a whole web page, the second to copy a block of text from a web document and paste it into another program.
Downloading a Web Page
- Go up to File on the menu bar of your browser
- Wait until the page is fully loaded on your screen.
- Go to File on the top left of the menu bar.
- Scroll down to Save As File (Explorer) or Save As (Netscape)
- When the Save As window opens change the drive to 'A' by typing A: (if saving to a floppy disk) or N:\MyWork\ (if saving to your user area) in front of the file name or type in a filename of your choice.
- Click the Save button.
Once you have downloaded a number of web pages you can then go onto the next stage which is:
Copying Text From A Web Page
- Open a web page, this can be a previously saved page.
- Find the text you want to copy.
- Highlight the text by dragging your mouse pointer over it.
- It will appear a different colour. Dark if on a light background or light on a dark background.
- Go up to Edit on the menu bar.
- Scroll down to Copy.
- The text is then copied onto the clipboard inside your computer ready to be pasted.
- It will stay on the clipboard until either you copy something else onto the clipboard or you switch off the computer.
- For the purpose of this course we will paste the text into a Word document.
Pasting Text Into a Word Document
- Shrink your browser program to the task bar at the bottom of your screen.
- Open Word if not already open.
- In Word start a new document.
- Either: Click on the paste button (it looks like a clipboard - DO NOT click the button that looks like a paste brush). OR
- Go to Edit on the menu bar.
- Scroll down to Paste.
- Your block of text will be pasted into the document.
- You might find that the formatting is different to the way it was displayed on the web page and may have to alter the spacing etc to make it look acceptable.
