Painted by James Bowles Settles (Gamma Omicron, Washington University) in 1935, the symbolic watercolor of the first meeting of the three Founders by the Rock provides a realistic image of the three cadets with hands clasped, forming the Legion of Honor. In the background is the VMI Superintendent's home with its two prominent towers from which the three reportedly had emerged after Bible class on a starlit Sunday evening in October 1868 and gathered behind the limestone outcropping on the edge of the parade grounds.
