De BRAOSE |
(1) William, Seignier de Braose, born 1040. Died 1090. Married Agnes de St.Clare and had son Philip. (2) Philip de Braose, born 1070. Son of William and Agnes. Married Aanor Totnes and had son William. (3) William de Braose, Sheriff of Hereford, died 1179. Son of Philip and Aanor. Married Bertha of Hereford and had son William. (4) William de Braose, born 1144. Died August 9th, 1211. Son of William and Bertha. Married Maud de St.Valerie (born 1155 and died 1210) and had son Reginald. William held the manor of Abergavenny Castle, which was the scene of two treacherous incidents. In 1175 William murdered Seisyllt ap Dyfnwal, Lord of Castle Arnallt, on Christmas Day in retaliation for the death of William's uncle Henry Fitzwalter. Meantime, William's men ravaged Seisyllt's lands, murdered both his sons, and captured his wife. William was perhaps the cruelest and most hated Norman Baron, as he seemed to go out of his way to commit violent and vengeful acts. He abandoned his wife by fleeing to France, while Maud was killed by King John, after he walled her up in her castle with her son William and left them to starve to death. (5) Reginald de Braose, died 1227. Son of William and Maud. Married Gracia de Briwere and had son William. (6) William, "Black Will", de Braose, born 1204 in Surrey, England. Died May 2nd, 1230 in Wales. Son of Reginald and Gracia. Married Eve Marshall and had daughters Maud (who married Roger Mortimer) and Eva. In the spring of 1230, Prince Llywelyn's wife Joanna, the illegitimate daughter of England's King John, was discovered in the Prince's chambers with William. The pair were imprisioned, and soon after William was executed. (7) Eva de Braose, born about 1234, died 1255. Daughter of William and Eve. Married William de Cantelou. |
