The episode begins with Sakura Kinomoto, a 10 year old girl, having a dream. In it, she is standing on a building, holding a wand, watching cards fly. There is a strange, small creature with her as well. She wakes up from the dream, late as always, and hurriedly gets dressed.

While she's getting ready, she introduces herself to be Sakura Kinomoto, a fourth grader at Tomoeda Elementary. She tells some basic info about herself, then goes downstairs for breakfast.

When she gets downstairs, she introduces her father, Fujitaka, and her brother, Touya. She says her brother is always mean to her, but he'd better watch out, because someday she was going to grow and step on him. He finishes his breakfast and leaves. Sakura quickly eats hers and chases after him. She catches up to him and they meet Yukito, Touya's best friend. Sakura has a crush on him, which is why she always goes to school with Touya. She wonders how anyone as nice as him could be friends with her brother. They get to school and he throws her a candy. Now you meet Tomoyo, Sakura's best friend, who has a hobby of filming Sakura.

In class, Sakura is not paying attention. Rather, she's drawing a picture of the creature from her dream that morning. After school, she's having cheerleading practice. Her friends comment on how athletic she is, but every now and then, she goes into a trance and messes up terribly. At this time she drops her Baton on her head and starts to cry.

A while later, she gets home from school, and checks the refrigerator. Then she begins to hear noises coming from the basement. She takes her baton and heads downstairs. As she searches her father's bookshelves, she sees a glowing book. The cover reads: The Clow. She takes it, and while she's looking at it, the clasp opens. She opens the book to find that it contains cards. She takes the top card and reads it. It says Windy. When she finishes reading it, a magic circle appears around her, and a strong gust of wind blows the cards out of the book.

She drops the book on the floor, and it starts to glow again. A strange creature comes out of the book cover. It's the creature from her dream. He introduces himself as Keroberos, the Guardian of the Clow. He explains about the Clow Book and its Cards, and that his job is to guard them. He then realizes that they're gone. He panics until Sakura gives him the Windy card. Then she tells him what happened to the rest of the cards, and they share a good laugh until Kero becomes furious and yells at her.

She eats her dinner quickly and takes her dessert to her room. Once there, she and Keroberos argue over who's job it is to get the cards back. She says it's his job because he took a 30 year nap and wasn't watching the cards. He says it's her job because she let them go in the first place. Finally he makes a contract between her and the Clow, using the key to the Clow Book to form her wand.

They continue fighting, but are interrupted by a giant bird flying outside the window creating a bunch of wind. Keroberos tells Sakura that its the Fly card and that she has to capture it. She runs outside in her pajamas and rollerblades. Keroberos teachers her how to call the wand, and she summons it. Still, she doesn't know how she's going to get it, until she has an idea. She leaps onto it's back and rides it into the air. She then uses the Windy card to bind its wings, and seals it. Keroberos then shows her the powers of the Fly. Her staff grows wings, and her and Keroberos fly off across the moon, continuing their arguement from earlier.
