Queensland State Flag

Queensland State Flag

The Queensland State Flag was first adopted in 1876. The badge consists of a crown superimposed upon a light blue Maltese cross. The choice of the Maltese cross has never been satisfactorily explained but is possibly taken from the Victoria Cross which is the Commonwealth's highest military award for valour.

South Australia State Flag

South Australia State Flag

The South Australia State Flag was adopted in 1904, replacing an earlier design first adopted in 1878. The earlier flag depicted the Seal of the Colony, which pictured Britannia stepping ashore and greeting an aboriginal. The current badge depicts the Piping Shrike which is the State's animal emblem.

Tasmania State Flag

Tasmania State Flag

The Tasmania State Flag was first adopted in 1876, though the flag was not officially proclaimed as such until 3 December 1975 by the Governor of Tasmania The Hon. Sir Stanley Burbury KCMG, KCVO, KBE. The badge, depicting a red lion in a walking stance, reflects Tasmania's historical links with the United Kingdom.

Victoria State Flag

Victoria State Flag

The Victoria State Flag bearing the Southern Cross was first adopted in 1870 with the Imperial Crown being later added in 1877. The Imperial Crown was later replaced with the Crown of St. Edward in September 1901 following federation.

Western Australia State Flag

Western Australia State Flag

The Western Australia State Flag was first adopted in 1875. The black swan depicted on the badge had been used as an emblem of Western Australia since the 1830s. The emblem was officially adopted as the colony's badge in 1870. The use of the emblem refers to the large amount of black swans that can be found on the Swan river.

Northern Territory Flag

Northern Territory Flag

The Northern Territory Flag was adopted in 1978 following the granting of self government in the same year. The flag features a stylised Sturt's Desert Rose, which is the Territory's floral emblem, encircling a seven pointed Commonwealth Star representing the Federation. The flag's Southern Cross is similar in design to the one found on the Victoria State Flag.

Governor of Tasmania Personal Flag

Governor of Tasmania Personal Flag

Before 1986 State Governors were represented by the Union Flag (more commonly known as the 'Union Jack'). With the passing of the Australia Act in 1986 and the severing of the British Parliaments technical responsibility for the States, each State adopted a new flag for each of their respective Governors. Most States adopted a similar design to the Tasmanian Governor's Personal flag pictured above, which consists of the State flag with the addition of a crown above the badge.
