El Frente Socialista de Puerto Rico

OVERVIEW

The Socialist Front of Puerto Rico is an organization composed of individual members and representatives from most of Puerto Rico's Revolutionary Socialist organizations and movements. Though members make up the back bone the initiative was to build a coalition of revolutionary socialist forces which was fostered through honest struggle and debate in 1990 by the various member organizations which include:

  • The Socialist Workers Movement/Movimiento Socialista de Trabajadores (MST)
  • The Revolutionary Puerto Rican Workers Party/Partido Revolucionario de los Trabajadores Puertorriqueños (PRTP-Macheteros)
  • The Workshop for Political Formation/Taller de Formación Política (TFP)
  • The Working Group on Puerto Rico (US-based)/Taller de Trabajo Sobre Puerto Rico (WGPR)

The Frente struggles for Puerto Rico and its people to be liberated from colonialism. For a future when working people in Puerto Rico and around the world will live in truly free and democratic societies founded on justice instead of the competition and greed forced by global market capitalism. The Frente is committed to the defense of working people of all nations and the right for workers to organize and fight.

WHY?

Facing a waning movement(s) in Puerto Rico that supported the cause of independence and revolutionary socialism it was imperative to create an organization that would bolster this cause. This was especially necessary while the world wide socialist movement(s), the Soviet Union, Germany & the many East European countries were experiencing crisis and soon collapse. Puerto Rico, a US colony especially affected by these events, along with the aftermath of the US government 's COINTELPRO program, military expansion, economic exploitation through US Multinationals and 936 and the imminent re-globalization of capital, needed a strong movement that would forward the cause of liberation and socialism for the Puerto Rican working people while the majority of other Puerto Rican pro-independence forces embraced old paradigms or flirted with electoral models of liberation that have traditionally lead to nothing.

INDEPENDENCE & SOCIALISM

Puerto Rico for 500 years has been subject to colonialism. The last 100 years under US control. Over the last 100 years Puerto Ricans unlike any other time in their history have been forced to migrate, have been subjected to medical experimentation, subjected to new forms of institutionalized racism, gained citizenship to fight in foreign wars, subject to vast economic re-structurization and the slow supplanting of its rich Afro-Indian Caribbean heritage.

As the stepping stone for US invasions Puerto Rico has had to endure a double indemnity as its people suffer having to bear witness to the suffering of our brother-cousins in the Caribbean and Latin America by the US as it uses Puerto Rican resources to invade other sovereign nations. The Puerto Rican people deserve nothing less than to be free from colonial exploitation and to build a society founded on the benefit of all who are in it than one based on the accumulation of wealth.

The Frente proposes a Program of Struggle with the objective that it serves a s the base for rich, inclusionary and democratic discussion among all oppressed sectors of Puerto Rican society.

The Frente aspires to contribute the organization and the class consciousness of the working class. The Frente makes a call to all worker organizations and to the general public to discuss, analyze the Frente's Program with the goal to enrich it and transform it not into the program of just a single particular organization but to make it the program of struggle for the Puerto Rican working class. If our program convinces you then JOIN US!
