What is free software

Last Updated:03/05/98

Free software, unlike many of you may think is not freeware.Free software is much more than that.it means that the authors of the program actually need to expose the source code(i.e. the software in uncompiled state), allow to change it, copy it, give it to someone else or even use some of the code in your own program, as long as that program is free as well and you give the credits

The offical position of the Free Software Foundation, or in a short FSF is not against commercial software, because software can be free and commercial at the same time.

The chairman of FSF, Richard Stallman, once compared software to a chair.

When you buy a chair, you can replace some of it's parts, you can give it to someone else, you can even copy that chair, i.e. create another identical chair, and i believe that the same goes to books, music or anything else that has "copyrights"

However, i resist even to free commercial software, although i prefer it on properity commerical software.in my opinion, there are two ways to develop software.one way is by employing a few developers, and pay them money, and than you may sell the program

The other way is that many developers will work in programming a software because they will need it, and not because they want to make money, so this way they will try to make the best software they can make
