Synopsis

 

Dimitris K. Xenakis is Lecturer in International Politics at the Department of Political Science, University of Crete. He has also lectured at the National School of Public Administration (2003-4), at the post-graduate program of the Department of International and European Studies at Athens Panteion University (2005-6) and at the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the Aegean University (2006-7). He has served as Scientific Advisor at the Hellenic Parliament (2004-7), as Strategic Analyst at the Defense Analyses Institute (2002-3) and as International Relations Advisor at the General Secretariat for Economic Planning and Defence Investments of the Hellenic Ministry of Defence (2003-4). He has participated as an expert in summits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and the EU’s Defence Ministerial Meetings, the Mediterranean Forum and the Union for the Mediterranean. His research output has been presented in a plethora of international conferences and committees and it is widely acknowledged in the relevant bibliography. He has authored, among others, The Politics of Order-Building in Europe and the Mediterranean (Athens: DAI, 2004), The emerging Euro-Mediterranean system (New York: MUP, 2001 with D. N. Chryssochou), Global Europe? The International Dimensions of the EU (Athens: HUAES -. Sideris 2006, co-edited with M. J. Tsinisizelis), chapters in edited volumes and articles in international academic journals, such as, The Review of International Affairs, Mediterranean Quarterly, Cambridge Review of International Affairs, The Cyprus Review, Perceptions and Hellenic Studies.

His doctoral thesis on Transforming Regional Orders: The Helsinki and Barcelona Processes Compared was examined by Dr. Geoffrey Edwards (Director, Center for International Studies, University of Cambridge) and Dr. Mick Dumper (Director, Department of Middle East Politics, University of Exeter) and was awarded by the Hellenic University Association of European Studies with the European Studies Award (11 May 2002).

1. Introduction to Political Science II- International Dimensions

The scope of this very basic course lies in the creation of the necessary theoretical background for the classification and understanding of international political phenomena. The aim is to familiarize students with International Relations theory, methodology, and typology. More specifically it examines:

The aim of this course is the formation of a framework for the understanding of contemporary Euro-Mediterranean politico-economic and socio-cultural relations. The constituent elements of regional security complexity, the actors involved in the organisation of post-Cold War Euro-Mediterranean politics are examined explicitly. Thematic units:

  • Complexity, Identity and Strategy in the Mediterranean.

5. Europe and the World

This course is focusing on Europes global role. The learning value lies, on the one hand, in understanding the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and External Relations, and on the other, in classifying its external priorities. Both internal and external frameworks of European strategies, as well as, the dynamics of different geographical frameworks, are examined explicitly. The comparative evaluation provides for a better understanding of European foreign and security policies. It examines:

  • The EU as an International Actor.
  • The Challenges of the Enlarged Europe.
  • The New Europe in the Global Economy.

·        The Future of European Security and Defense.

This course examines the impact of EU on the international political scene. It examines the impact of EU as an international actor and the importance of CFSP. This course focuses on the problems of this political sector of EU along with both the European development perspectives and their significance for European integration and international politics. 1. Introduction to International Relations

This introductory course aimed to create the necessary background for the study of international relations, i.e one of the three main majors of the Department. Students familiarized with the science of International Relations, through examining the most important theoretical approaches (Realism- Idealism- Behavioralism- Constructivism), the basic levels of analysis and the general characteristics of International Organization.

 

2. Regional Cooperation in the Black Sea and Caucasus

This course aimed at studying and comprehending the regional dynamics in the areas of the Black Sea and Caucasus, their interrelation with the Mediterranean area and with the regional developments, emerging after the end of the Cold War.

 

3. Euro-Mediterranean Relations

The aim of this course was to comprehend the contemporary state of international relations in the Mediterranean, emphasizing on the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. Thematic units:

  • The Role of the European Powers and the USA in the Mediterranean.
  • Institutions and Regional Co operations in the Mediterranean
  • The EU’s  Mediterranean Policies (1961-1994) and the Barcelona Process (1995-2005).

The aim of this course was to comprehend the regional dynamics in the Mediterranean area in the light of security and geo-politics. Thematic units:

Athens Panteio University (2005-2006)

 

As a scientific partner in the Post- Graduate Program Jean Monnet ‘European Law and Policy’ at the Department of International and European Studies and in cooperation with Prof. C. Stefanou, taught the course ‘Institutional and Political System of European Union: Theoretical Approaches’. The course focused on the European integration and its theoretical reflections. More specifically:
