Overview: This lesson is designed to assist students in understanding the necessary skills in doing Task III assignment in the New Regents of English. By analyzing each work (poem and the story) through discussing the different literary elements and techniques involved, students can have a deeper understanding of the how the use of literary techniques can enhance the theme or characters in the works of literature?

Objective:

  1. To learn the skills in writing Task III essay

2. To learn to analyze different genres of literature

Materials: Sample question of Task III (see handout)

Procedures and Activities:

1.Summarize the main idea of the poem and identify the author's tone.

2.Identify two literary elements or techniques used in the poem, cite at least one example of each element or technique to illustrate the terms used. When using the original words from the poem, use " ".

3.Make the connection between the literary elements or techniques and the theme of the poem or the author's attitude.

  1. Begin your introductory paragraph by stating the thesis statement of the essay. Mention in a general way what literary elements or techniques are used in the selections and how the use enhances the theme of the tone.
  2. Development:

  1. Compare and contrast the two selections and point out the similarities and differences.
  2. Discuss the poem. Point out the literary elements or techniques used in the poem and give at least one example for each element or technique. State how the use of literary elements helps enhance the theme of the poem as well as the author's attitude toward war.
  3. Discuss the story. Point out the literary elements or techniques used in the story and give at least one example for each element or technique. State how the use of literary elements helps enhance the theme of the poem as well as the author's attitude toward war.

3. Conclusion: use different words to restate your thesis statement. Here you can also add your personal opinion about war and hoe the authors' attitude toward war has changed yours.
