The Situation:
Your English class is learning about people who take control of their destiny and make their dreams come true. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay about Charlyne Hunter and how her determination and her dreams motivate her to overcome the destiny- like obstacles and fulfilled her dreams. In preparation for writing your essay, listen to the Prologue by Charlyne Hunter about her memories of how she and her friends fought for their human rights , take control of their destiny, and fulfilled their dreams. Then use relevant information from the speech to write your essay.

For this part of the test, you will listen to an excerpt from a book about
a woman who overcame incredible odds. You will answer some multiple choice
questions, and write a response based on the situation described below.
You will hear the speech twice. You may take notes any time you wish
during the readings.
The Situation
Your English class has been reading a lot of literature about fate and
destiny this semester. Now, your teacher wants you to write an essay which
takes the opposite view: that people can defy what they think they fates
are and achieve great things. The example your teacher gives you is the
prologue to In My Place, a book written by about one of the first
African-Americans to attend the University of Georgia. You will listen to
this excerpt from In My Place in preparation for your essay. Then, use
relevant information from the excerpt to write your essay.
