In 1918, at the end of WWI, Italian troops had occupied large parts of the
former Habsburg Kronland Dalmatia. By the Treaty of Rapallo of 1920, they
were however forced to give up most of the occupied lands, only being left
in possession of the city of Zara and some surrounding territories, which ,
in 1923, were organized into an Italian province. (1)
In 1941 the province was extended with new territories taken from Yugoslavia
and became part of the Italian governorship of Dalmatia.
After the Italian surrender in 1943, Croatia proclaimed the annexation of the
province, but before its representative could take over, the Germans occupied
the territory.
(1) The province included :
- The City of Zara
- The Municipalities of Boccagnazza, Brogo-Erizzo,
Cerno and part of Dielo
- The islands of Lagosta group (three lighthouses
and an airbase)
- The islands of the Pelagosa group (one lighthouse)
