YUKON DISTRICT OF THE CANADIAN NORTH-WEST TERRITORIES
British presence in the Yukon river region started in 1840 when the Hudson's
Bay Company established its first trading post, Fort Frances.
In 1870, like the other possessions of the Company, the region became part of
the Canadian North-West Territories. No formal administration was however set
up and for the next 25 years Yukon actually was a kind of "nomandsland" where
fur traders, gold diggers and adventurers of all kind acted freely.
It was in order to end this lawlessness - and to prevent a possible U.S. take
over (1) - that the North-West Mounted Police was sent to the region in 1894
and that a district of Yukon was organized in 1895.
(1) In this period Yukon actually was within the zone of influence of
the major US company in Alaska, the Alaska Commercial Company.
It was only in 1903 that the frontier between Yukon and Alaska was
finally fixed.

CANADIAN TERRITORY OF YUKON
In 1898, following the massive "Klondike" gold-rush, the Canadian government
decided to give Yukon a more organized administration : it was detached from
the North-West Territories and made a separate territory, directly dependent
of the central government.
