The Osmanli Elayet of Yanya (Alb.: Janinë, Gr.: Ioanina) was created ca 1846 out of
parts of the Elayet Rumeli and was later expanded with parts of the Elayet Selanik
(1856).
It became a Vilayet in 1867.
At its largest extent (in 1880) the Vilayet covered Southern Albania and two Greek
regions - Epiros and Thessalia - north of the Kingdom of Greece.
The following year its size was however reduced as Greece annexed Thessalia - then
forming the Sandjak of Thirhala (Gr.: Trikkala) - and a small part of Epiros - the
Kaza of Narta (Gr.: Arta) in the Sandjak of Preveze (Gr.: Préveza).
On the eve of the Balkan Wars in 1912 Yanya included five Sandjaks :
- Berat
- Chamlak (Gr.: Parga)
- Delvine (Alb.: Delvire, Gr.: Gijirokaster)
- Preveze
- Yanya
The Vilayet ceased to exist in 1912, when it was occupied by Greek forces. (1)
(1) The following year its territory was divided between Greece and Albania
While the inclusion of the northern Sandjak of Berat into the new state
of Albania caused no problem, the division of the southern Sandjaks led
to a conflict that would last until 1921.
