WASHINGTON D.C.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

In 1800 the capital of the U.S. was moved from Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) to the City of Washington in the federal District of Columbia, an area created in 1791 from lands ceded by the states of Maryland and Virginia. In 1871 the three existing local governments - the Corporation of Georgetown (since 1791), the Corporation of the City of Washington (since 1802) and the Court of the County of Washington (since 1801) - were abolished and replaced by a municipal corporation known as the District of Columbia. ____________________________________________________________________________
