In 1777 the north western region of the State of New York revolted and
proclaimed itself the independent State of New Connecticut, soon renamed
Vermont.
For ten years Vermont now performed all offices of a sovereign state and it
was only after the dispute whit New York had been settled by a payment of $
30000 that it finally entered the Union.
