SWISS CANTON (STATE / ETAT / STAAT) VALAIS /WALLIS
Upper Valais, which had been governed since 999 by the Catholic Bishops of Sitten
(Sion) and became a republic in 1628, became an ally (Zugewandete Ort) of the Swiss
Confederacy in 1528.
In 1798 it joined with Lower Valais - till then a dependency of Savoy - to form the
Republic of Valais, which finally joined the Confederacy in 1815.
