In 1231 the valley of Uri, since 1173 a possession of the counts of Habsburg (the
future rulers of Austria), was declared directly dependent (Reichsunmittelbar) of
the Emperor.
It was however only after the formation of the Swiss League in 1291, the battle of
Morgarten in 1315 and the ensuing confiscation of their possessions in the region
in 1324 that the Habsburg threat finally came to an end.
