BRITISH COLONY OF THE STRAITS SETTLEMENTS

British presence in the Malaya peninsula started in 1786 when the HEIC (Honorable East India Company) acquired the island Pinang (Penang) from the Sultan of Kedah. British direct rule was later also imposed on some other territories of the region and by 1942 these possessions - forming since 1826 the dependency of the Straits Settlements - included : - Labuan (as part of Singapore 1907 - 1912, then as a separate settlement) - Malacca (since 1826) - Pinang (since 1826) - Singapore (since 1826) - Two dependencies : - Christmas Island (since 1889, part of Singapore since 1900) - the Cocos or Keeling Islands (since 1886, part of Singapore 1903 - 1942) At first subordinated to British India, the Straits Settlements became a British colony of their own in 1867. __________________________________________________________________________________
