SEYCHELLES

BRITISH COLONY OF THE SEYCHELLES

The Seychelles - till then a French dependency - were occupied by the British in 1810 an formally ceded to them by the Treaty of Paris in 1814, becoming a dependency of the Colony of Mauritius. Some degree of separation was effected in 1872 when the islands were granted financial autonomy. In 1897 the Administrator of the islands was endorsed with the full powers of a Governor and in 1903 the islands were formally separated from Mauritius, becoming a separate British Crown Colony. (1) (1) The colony also included some other minor islands, such as the Aldabra, the Amirantes, the Cosmoledo and the Farquhar. With the exception of the Aldabra, these islands were mostly without permanent population.
