In 1240 the "Community of the Free Peasants of Schwyz" (Markgenossenschaft der freien
Bauern von Schwyz) - located in the central part of the future Swiss canton and
mentioned for the first time in 972 - which had become subject to the Habsburg (the
future rulers of Austria) in 1173, was declared directly dependent (Reichsunmittelbar)
of the Emperor.
It was however only after the formation of the Swiss League in 1291, the battle of
Morgarten in 1315 and the ensuing confiscation of their possessions in the region
in 1324 that the Habsburg threat finally came to an end. (1)

also annexed, the last of these being the Republic of Gersau in 1817/1818
