The Spanish American provinces of Pamplona and Socorro - created in 1... and later
part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada - revolted against their Spanish overlords
in 1810 - 1811, proclaimed their independence and later joined the new state of
Colombia.
Within this state they were at first included in the Department of Boyacá (1821 -
1832), but later they again became separate provinces.
In the course of the following years some new provinces were created out of their
territories (Guanentá and Lebrija in 1844, Santander and Soto in 1850 and García
Rovira in 1853). These new provinces were however shortliving and by 1855 the two
original provinces had been restored.
In 1857 they formed - with parts of the provinces of Mompox (mainly in Magdalena)
and Vélez (mainly in Boyacá) - the sovereign state of Santander, a member of the
Confederation - since 1861 Federation - of New Granada.

COLOMBIAN DEPARTMENT OF SANTANDAR
In 1886 the states were abolished and Santander became a Department under direct
authority of the central government. (1)
(1) All that remained of the former sovereignity was the right to manage the
departmental financial affairs.
This right was partly curtailled in 1928 when Santander was forbidden to
to borrow abroad without the sanction of the central government.
In 1910 the northern part of the department was detached to form the new
Department of Norte de Santander.
