The Canton of Sankt Gallen was formed in 1803 by the merger of parts of the former
cantons of Linth and Säntis, which had been established in 1798. (1)

- Gaster
- Rapperschwyl
- Sargans
- Utznach
- the upper parts of the former County of Toggenburg
(originally a dependency of the Abbey)
- Sax (from Glarus) and Werdenberg (from Zürich)
Parts taken from Säntis included :
- two former Zugewandter Orte : - the Abbey of Sankt Gallen
- the City of Sankt Gallen
- the former Gemeine Herrschaft of Rheintal
- the lower parts of the former County of Toggenburg
