SAMOS

PRINCIPALITY OF SAMOS

The island of Samos (T.: Sisam Atasi) became part of the Osmanli Empire in 1475. For most of the time it was part of the Sandjak of Rodos of the Elayet/Vilayet of the Djeza'ir-i Bahr-i Sefid, but later it beeame a separate Sandjak. (1) In 1821 the Greek inhabitants of the island revolted and established a de facto independent administration. Despite this, Samos wasn't included into the new independent Greek state created in 1830 and unrest continued until 1832 when, following the intervention of the Great Powers, the islannd was reorganized as an autonomous and tributary principality of the Osmanli Empire under the garanty of France, Russia and the U.K. In 1912 partizans of the union with Greece revolted and established a provisional government. SOOn afterwards the island was occupied by Greek troops and in 1913, by the Treaty of London, it was formally ceded to Greece. (1) It was still listed as such in 1867, but afterwards it's unclear wether it still was part of the Vilayet or wether it was directly dependent of the central Osmanli government. __________________________________________________________________________________
