The US Territory North West of the Ohio (or North West Territory) - was established
in 1787 out of Native American lands ceded to the US by Great Britain in 1783.
At its greatest extend the territory covered the present-day states of Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as part of Minnesota.
In 1800 most of these lands - except Ohio itself and the eastern part of present-
day Michigan - were detached and organized into the new US Territory of Indiana.
In 1803 what remained of the Northwest territory was divided between :
- the US State of Ohio (the southern, most populated part),
- the territory of Indiana (the northern part).
Ohio in the Civil War
Except for a Southern raid in Jul 1863 [Commanding Officer Cavalry Corps, Army of
Tennessee : BrigGen. John Hunt Morgan (1825 - 1864)], Ohio remained untouched by
the war.
(1) The UK only gave up its last claims on the area in 1814, when the treaty of
Ghent ending the War of 1812 - 1814 was signed.
