In 1884, as reward for their assistance against one of his opponents,
Dinizulu, Chief of Usuthu, granted large tracts of land in Zululand to
his Boer allies.
The territory was organised as the independent Nieuwe Republiek (also
called Vriiheid = Freedom)

In 1888 the New Republic was annexed to the South African Republic.
Its territory was transferred to Natal in 1903.
