The ancient kingdom of Man - from 1406 Lordship - became a selfgoverning fief of
the English Crown in 1334.
By the 18th century, the island had become a major center of smuggling trade and
to stop this the British Government purchased it in 1765 for £70,000. (1)
Originally ruled as a British possession, its statute of selfgoverning dependency
of the Fnglish Crown was restored in 1866. (2)
(1) Until 1830 the Dukes of Atholl, the former Lords of Man, continued to enjoy
some financial rights.
(2) Man was no part of the United Kingdom, which was however responsible for
the island's defence and foreign relations.
