In order to defend its rights against the bishops of the town, who were its lords
since 1156, Genève entered into alliance with the Swiss cantons of Bern and Fribourg
in 1526, becoming an Imperial Free City in 1533.
The alliance with Fribourg was broken off in 1536, but in 1584 a new alliance was
made with the canton of Zürich.
After a period of French domination (1798 - 1813) the independence of the City was
restored and in 1814 it became a Canton of the Swiss Confederacy.
