The town of Fribourg was founded in 1157. It became a Free Imperial City in 1218,
but later came under the rule of the Habsburgs (1277) and of Savoy (1452).
In 1478 it again became a Free Imperial City, which joineed the Swiss Confederacy
in 1481.
