ENTRE RÍOS
ARGENTINE PROVINCE OF ENTRE RÍOS
Since 1783 the area between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers in the eastern part of the
intendency Buenos Aires (in the Spanish Vice-Royalty of the Río de la Plata) was
known as the "Entre Ríos" region.
It had been reached by Spanish travellers as early as 1520 but although they later
estblished some settlements, the region remained largely unorganized until the late
XVIII century, when the Portuguese expansion in the area forced the Spanish to set
up a more structured administration. (1)
In 1814 - as an answer to separatist tendencies - the Argentine government detached
Entre Rios from Buenos Aires and proclaimed it a separate province. The area was
however occupied by Uruguay and became part of the League of Free Peoples (Liga de
los Pueblos Libres) until 1819.
The following year it became the heartland of the ephemeral República Entrerriana,
which also covered Corrientes and Misiones.
In 1821 pro-Argentine forces toke power and Entre Rios once again became a province
of Argentina. It was however only after the events of 1870 - 1871 (s.b.) that it
lost the last remnants of its political particularism.
(1) Much of the area remained Native American territory for quite some time
(see here for more)
