The territory of later British Honduras was a neglected part of the Spanish
capitaincy - general of Guatemala, when in 1638 English logwoodcutters
established a settlement in the region.
In 1763, by the treaty of Paris, Spain recognised this commercial activities
in exchange for British recognition of Spanish sovereignty. In 1798 British
settlers defeated the Spanish, in this way de facto ending their domination
over the region.(1)
In the meanwhile the British zone had been steadily expanded, reaching its
present limits in 1825.
The territory, which since 1786 was a selfgoverning dependency of Jamaica,
became a Crown Colony in 1862 and was definitively separated from Jamaica in
1884.
(1) Spain never formally gave up its claims on the region and
after the end of the Spanish domination, the new successor
state of Guatemala herited this claims.
