In 1846, at the division of the Columbia River region (or Oregon) between the
U.K. and the U.S., its northern part was assigned to the British.
At first the administration of the region - known as Columbia / New Caledonia
- was entrusted to the Hudson's Bay Company, but after the discovery of gold
in 1858 and the arrival a large number of white settlers, its southern part
was organized as the new British Crown Colony of British Columbia. (1)
(1) Unlike the other British colonies in Northern America, British
Columbia wasn't granted internal selfgovernment.
In the course of the following years the frontiers of the colony
would be expanded to finally include all British possessions in
what would eventually become the Canadian province :
The Queen Charlotte Islands were included in the zone assigned
to the British in 1846. In 1852 they were made a dependency of
Vancouver Island.
In 1863 they were transferred to British Columbia.
Stikine Territory had been set up in 1862, after the discovery of
gold in the territories north of the colony of British Columbia.
It was annexed to British Columbia in 1863.
Vancouver Island was included in the zone assigned to the British
in 1846. In 1849, out of fear for a possible annexation by the U.S.,
it was made a British colony, whose administration was however
entrusted to the Hudson's Bay Company until 1858, when the British
government toke over.
In 1866 Vancouver Island became part of British Columbia.
