The ancient town of Basel - already mentioned as Basilea in 374 - was at first part
of the possessions of the Bishops of the Basel.
After the great earthquake of 1356 it gained however many sovereign rights (own
currency, customs and judiciary) and by 1386 it had in fact become a Reichsstadt/
Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire. (1)
Already allied to the Swiss Confederation for some years, Basel finally joined it
in 1501.
(1) At the same time the city also started annexing surrounding territories,
the last of these being a part of what remained of the diocese of Basel
in 1815.
In 1833, after a revolt, these territories however became the separate
canton of Basel - Landschaft.
