BAHRAIN
SHEIKHDOM OF BAHRAIN
Ca 1766 part of the al-Utub tribe, headed by the al-Khalifah clan left Kuwait and
settled at Zubara, on the west coast of the peninsula of Qatar.
From here they occupied the island of Bahrain in 1783, making it the center of their
power in 1796, after the destruction of Zubara by the Wahhabi.
Bahrain was a signatory of the treaties of 1820, 1835, 1843 and 1853 and became a
British protectorate - subject to the residency of the Persian Gulf - after the
treaties of 1861, 1880 and 1892.

From 1816 to the appointment of an official representative in 1900, the defence of
British interests in Bahrain was entrusted to so-called "Native Agents", local

and of the local economic and political conditions.
