Central Iraq was conquered by the Osmanli in the early 16th century and an Elayet
of Baghdad covering this region was created in 1534. (1)
In 1867 Baghdad became a Vilayet, which was occupied by British forces in 1917 and
then became part of British Mesopotamia.
(1) At some time the Elayet/Vilayet however also included :
- Northern Iraq from the end of the 18th century to 1855 and again from
1865 to 1879 when the Vilayet of Mosul was founded.
- Southern Iraq (and the Osmanli territories in East and Central Arabia)
from the end of the 18th century to 1875 and again from 1880 to 1884
when the Vilayet of Basra was created.
On the eve of the British occupation Baghdad included three Sandjaks :
- Baghdad
- Diwaniya
- Karbala'
