COLOMBIAN DEPARTMENT OF THE ATLANTIC (DEL ATLANTICO)
In 1905 the economical important coastal parts of the Department of Bolívar were
detached from that department and organized into a new department of the Atlantic
(del Atlántico).
It was renamed Barranquilla in 1908 and abolished in 1910, only to be immediately
replaced by a new department once again styled del Atlántico. (1)
(1) Like all departments the Atlántico enjoyed the right to manage its own
financial affairs.
This right was partly curtailled in 1928 when it was forbidden to borrow
abroad without the sanction of the central government.
