In 1810 the Spanish American province of Antioquia - created in 1579 and later part
of the Viceroyalty of New Granada - revolted against its Spanish rulers, proclaimed
its independence and later joined the new state of Colombia.
Within this state Antioquia was at first included in the Department of Cundinamarca
(1821 - 1832), but later it again became a separate province, which was briefly
divided into the three provinces of Antioquia, Córdoba and Medellín in 1851 - 1855.
In 1856 the reconstructed province of Antioquia became a sovereign state of the
Confederation - since 1861 Federation - of New Granada.
