No restriction on ex-MB to defend his party post :
Kuala Lumpur, January 6, 2000 (Sinchew)
Former Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib
can stand
for re-election in the party's general assembly this year, said
Umno secretary
general Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob.
He said Muhammad, on leave since 1997 from performing his
duties as Umno
vice-president, can do so as his leave will end simultaneously
with the expiry of
his term as vice-president at the general assembly on May 11 to
May 13.
Muhammad, 53, resigned as Selangor Menteri Besar in April 1997
and was
later given leave from performing his duties as Umno vice-president
by the
supreme council following court cases that he faced.
At the end of 1996, Muhammad was detained at the Brisbane
Airport in
Australia for failing to declare RM2.7mil which he was carrying.
A Brisbane
court cleared Muhammad of all charges in May 1998.
Muhammad was also charged in court here for failing to declare
all his assets
and that of his family. He was found not guilty of all charges by
the High Court
here.
