The SSP

Candidate: James Stewart

The first party to announce their candidate. The SSP are new, indeed have only existed in Ayr for the last 7 months or so. They say they will fight a serious campaign and there is every evidence that they will. The leader Tommy Sheridan has already addressed a public meeting and been interviewed in the local paper. Yet, even in that interview there is limited admitence that they will not win Ayr (although Sheridan states he is 'confident' of having a second MSP to join him). Why not, Ayr is simply not a left-wing constituency, the blue rinse runs through it. Despite this they are confident to win votes off the Labour party (this it has to be said is good news for the Tories - and if nothing else could claim to be a warning to Labour). Locally there is a local group and the candidate is local as well, in his first statement he voiced his opposition to the present level of the Min. Wage. However, they may try hard, but it is unlikely that the people of Ayr will warm to them in vast numbers and there is little evidence for support in winning terms. Indeed Labour only won for the first time in 1997, now that it had gone more to the left. It is possible that there may be a supprise in support for the SSP, although the best result would be to beat the Lib Dems (which are not establised at all). If they do get much of a vote, then credit must be given, after all they are newly established and fight against a conservative population with policies that are at odds with them on many issues.
