Candidate: Stuart Ritchie
Although they are the third party in UK politics, and in the government of Scotland, the Lib Dems don't do well in Ayr, and unlike the SNP they haven't even had the advantage of seeing an increasing vote. It is even possible that in this election they could find themselves in a weaker position that 4th (any of the other parties that want to claim a small victory really have to push the Liberals out of 4th place). However, they continue to fight and have put forward Paisley University student Stuart Ritchie as candidate (one of the youngest ever). He has a strong fight ahead, although the Lib dem campaign in Ayr is neer one of the most strongest - indeed at the last local council elections they did not put up a single candidate for any of the 30 odd seats.
The one possibility however is they may tae votes from the Tories. As they have moved more to the Right, and taking strong stances on issues such as Europe and Section 28, some more liberal voters may be disinfranchised and swap support, although it must be remembered that Ayr's Tory supporters are fairly right-wing.
