Edible uses for Pine

Pine has 5 times the vitamin C found in lemons, and it will help aid (if not cure) the healing of scurvy. Some Indian tribes would use young pine shoots as a green vegetable. To prepare the bark, peel the dead outer bark away and aquire a fillet of the white, living bark on the inside. You can prepare it now or dry it for later; if you are drying it for later, be sure to soak it for a few hours prior to cooking. Soak the fillets first in warm/hot water until the water is a dark voilet color. Leach (by boiling) the bark fillets in 4 changes of water for 20 minutes each. On the first time, the water will be red from the resins that are boiled out; on the second it will be pink and so on. When it is finally finished, the bark fillets will be a pinkish color and have a texture similiar to turkey breast. It is a good meat substitute, and it is high in the fiber and carbohydrates necessary to survival.
